Plants, Seeds and Seed Collecting
Australia has 700,000 species of native plants. 85% of these are found nowhere else in the world. The seeds from many of these plants are collected, cleaned and sold for land rehabilitation and revegetation. They are also used by nurseries and individuals to grow plants for front yards and parklands.

Cleaning Seed
Cleaning seed on a 43 degree day!
Acacia tetragonaphylla
A spread of Acacia tetragonaphylla - just making sure it's dry. Seed that goes moldy has to be thrown out.
Acacia tetragonaphylla Seeds
Very pretty, but they come from quite a tough, prickly tree!
Home
Find a patch of seed. Set up camp. Pick the seed. Pack up camp. Repeat.
Half Clean Senna Seeds
This is Senna artemissiodes ssp. filifolia. Senna, once called Cassia, is notorious for hybridisation. Identification is quite tricky.
A Bin of Senna Seeds
Acacia ancistrocarpa
This is one of the first to ripen in the Pilbara. The pods are pruned off the tree and left to dry. When dry enough, they spring open, releasing the seed.
Acacia pyrifolia
From another prickly tree, these pods are quite crunchy. I had to fold the shade cloth over these and drive over them before sieving.
Tools of the Trade
A cheap badminton racquet is ideal for small, light shrubs. It knocks the seed off without damaging the plant.
